One thing is certain, quarantine has given us all a lot more “me” or “us” time. This means there’s also been a lot more lube purchased ever since lockdown began.

There are hundreds upon thousands of lubes circulating stores and the internet today. How do you know which one is best for you?

Many factors can determine which lube you should use and which ones you should absolutely avoid. By answering a few questions you can immediately filter out which ones don’t fit your mood or, let’s say, plan of attack. Then you can narrow down your selection from there to one that better suits your needs.

All too often people will just grab and go from any convenience store and “hope for the best”. Do not shop like these people. (major eye-roll)

Let’s answer some questions first.

What’s The Difference Between Water-based and Silicone Lube?

If you can answer this question, you’ve already conquered roughly half of the lube deciding battle.

The characteristics below have been generalized to some degree for learning purposes. The intention is to educate on anal play practice as this is a gay men’s blog.

However, everyone is built and wired differently in terms of sexual stimulation. Do not feel like this is a ‘one-size fits all model’ by any means.

Use this as more of a rough learning blueprint to navigating which lube you enjoy best.

I’ve personally tried many varieties of lubes before finding the ones I love now. Even today, though, I’ll still experiment from time to time and switch things up with my products. This prevents my body from becoming too accustomed to one particular brand, feel, style, etc.

Knowing the basics to lube help in switching my products up without worrying about things like poor quality or irritation.

Water-based Lube

Just as the name suggests, the main ingredient is water. If you’re just getting started into the world of lube, water-based is a good place to begin.

PROS vs CONS

– Can be reactivated with a little water

Does not stain your bedding

– Great for solo use

– Recommended for toys

– Typically moisturizing and can be absorbed into the skin

Good for using with condoms

– Will wash off with too much water, so no good in the shower

– Can break down and get sticky after being used for too long

– Will have to reapply often

– Not great for anal sex, but still usable

– Be mindful of flavored lubes as they can contain allergens and irritants that’ll be rough on tissue

Silicone-based lube

If water-based isn’t for you, silicone is a great option and in most cases will be your go-to product. Take caution with most cases

Evaluate yours and or your partner’s needs and decide on what lube will best suit your situation.

PROS vs CONS

– Most brands are hypoallergenic

– Doesn’t need to be applied often

– Safe for condoms

Anal play safe

– Does not dry out

– Generally thicker in feeling and longer-lasting

– Can even be used for frizzy hair ends and to prevent chaffing during sports

Will ruin silicone toys but is okay on non-silicone products like glass or metal

– The breakdown in the toy can also create homes for bacteria to grow

– Needs soap and water to rinse off

– Most likely will stain sheets

– If it gets on your counters/floors, use a spray cleaner to remove it or it’ll leave them slick

Oil-based Lubes

Although they are not as common, oil-based lubes are still worth mentioning as your likely to come across them.

Your main oil-based lubes will consist of either almond or coconut oil. These are great for longer-lasting sex and unprotected sex. They can even be used in the beginning for massage and foreplay.

Do not use them with latex condoms. They will break the condom within seconds and defeat the purpose.

Other oil bases like baby oil or vaseline are not recommended. Due to their ingredient makeup, they can dry out your skin and tissue. This will cause redness and irritation to your very sensitive parts.

Oil-based lubes have also been associated with higher rates of infections and staining bedding.

Are you playing alone, with someone, or something?

Now that you know the big difference in the ingredient design, what’s your situation?

First-time lube users, a little goes a long way so start small and build. You can always add more, taking it away- not so much.

If you’re alone and practicing with anal play via your finger(s), I recommend either a water-based lube or even a simple dab of almond or coconut oil. Just remember to use a separate container of oil for cooking 😉

Are you alone, but using toys? Then refer to what the toy is made of to decide from there. Remember, silicone lube does not go with a silicone toy. Use water-based in this case.

Let’s say you’re not alone and your partner is joining in on the fun. Silicone is preferred over water due to its thicker consistency and ability to last longer. The anal canal is not only dry but highly sensitive and vascular.

This means if you’re not careful with products, you could cause extra dryness, irritation, and even possibly some minor tearing.

What to Avoid When Shopping For Lube

Now that you know how to narrow your search down, you need to know what ingredients to look out for.

The more clean, organic, and chemical-free your lube is the better for your body. Lube, just like make-up, lotion, sunscreen, and other skin products will to some degree be absorbed into our skin.

Here are some common ingredients often found in lubes that you should avoid:

  • Petroleum
  • Glycerin
  • Chlorhexidine gluconate
  • Propylene glycol
  • Artificial coloring and sugars

Please be cautious when trying products that have “warming” or “numbing” sensations to them. If you’re unsure about a product, adult stores have staff that’ll gladly help you to point you in the right direction.

Adult stores often have small packets of their lube products for customers to try out at home before committing to buying. This is a great way to test the product and ensure you have no irritation or allergic reactions to any of its ingredients.

Ideally, you want to find products as close to 100% containing all-natural products, free from chemicals, free from parabens, and free from additives.
