First impressions are always important. Especially if this particular first impression is when you’re having sex with someone. You definitely don’t want it to be…well, shitty. So one of my first topics of discussion is none other than how to prepare to bottom.
Think Trinity The Tuck (All-Stars) when she performed a song on how to properly tuck. We all know it happens, but not everyone knows how to do it properly. It’s ballsy, informative, and needs to be done! Just like educating people on how to “clean out”. When it comes to gay sex, it’s all about the prep work and practice.
What is douching?
Also known as ” cleaning out”. It is what gay men do before sex if they plan on being on the receiving end, a.k.a. the “Bottom”. This ensures their hole is clean (poop-free) both on the outside and inside. To do so, you insert either a douche or hose attachment inside the anus and flush either clean water or a solution in so that when it comes out it helps remove as much fecal matter as possible. Super sexy I know, but this is a topic gay men need education on.
Why do I need to prepare to ‘Bottom’?
Because no one likes a messy Bottom! That and it becomes much more enjoyable for both partners when the prep work has been done. Just imagine what happens when you don’t prepare, exactly- a mess. Along with no mess, you also significantly decrease the risk of spreading bacteria to your partner.
Imagine it, his mouth and tongue on/in your ass and you didn’t do any prep work. GROSS. As the ‘Bottom’, you’ll also feel much more comfortable during sex and less likely to feel bloated, cramped or ya know- shit yourself.

When should I “clean out”?
This is tricky because everyone’s body is different.
It is in your best interest to practice in advance, especially before your first time. Spend some quality alone time and find a rhythm that works for you before venturing out to your hook-up. On average 20-30 minutes before penetration is usually a safe time frame.
However, many factors come into play here:
- When are you having sex?
- When did you last eat?
- How much sex do you plan on having?
- Is more than one person involved, or just a quick one and done?
- Are you going out dancing or to dinner first, and is the sex not until later?
As I said, practice makes perfect and you know your body best. In for a long night and may not have a chance to “freshen up” again? In this instance, many people turn to their good friend Imodium. Taking one while getting ready helps slow down your bowels a lot to ensure you stay cleaner for longer. Again, everyone’s body is different so find what method works for you.
The information I provided is not meant to treat or diagnose any medical conditions. Please consult your primary doctor for all recommendations and questions that you may have before using Imodium. The views and opinions here are based on my own personal experience and preference.
Where do I prepare to “Bottom”?
IDEALLY, the comfort of your own bathroom whether it’s over the toilet or in the shower. However, thanks to modern sex stores and vendors, we are now equipped with a wide variety of tools that can be used while traveling, or while just being a “hoe on the go”. You can find my list of recommended products for preparing to Bottom on my Products page, filed under Sex.
How do I prepare to ‘Bottom’?
With your lubed-up douching device, carefully insert it into your anus. Once in, slowly compress the bulb to begin inserting water SLOWLY inside your butt. If you’re using a shower attachment, turn the showerhead on before inserting it so you’re aware of how fast the water is coming out.
NOTE: (be mindful of how much water you insert, how quickly, and at what temperature) It shouldn’t be too hot or cold, and it shouldn’t come out super fast. Be gentle to your hole. The inside is very sensitive and can be easily damaged.
Let the water in for a few seconds. It shouldn’t take much water to do, but this is also a bit preferential and depends on the length of sex you’re having. Try to not overdo it with the water. Again practice makes perfect. Go slow when you’re learning this and pay attention to your body. You should be able to get a rhythm down after some practice and it should hopefully get easier.
Once you feel that “gotta go” sensation, carefully maneuver to the toilet and let it out.
DISCLAIMER: This will more than likely need to be repeated a few times to ensure you are fully cleaned out and prepared. When you notice the water is coming out just as clear as it went in, then you know you are ready.
Typically at the end, I’ll also do a finger check as well to make sure there isn’t any extra water left behind, as well as air. Once you’ve ensured you are fully clean, I recommend a shower to fully rinse off.
Then you are good to go! Happy Bottoming adventures to you my Bottom brother.
